Let’s take a moment to discuss tire rotations and why it’s an important regular service item for your car or truck … especially in and around the Dubuque area.

The main reason we rotate the tires on our vehicles regularly is so your tires wear more evenly. If you were to keep your tires in the same spot for the life of the tire, they would undoubtedly wear out a lot faster than if you rotated them regularly. Let’s face it, tires are expensive … there’s no other way to put it.  And with that being said, who wouldn’t want to get more miles out of their tires? 

Another reason we should rotate our tires is that it allows for more balanced handling in adverse weather situations. 

How often should a person rotate their tires?

Generally speaking, you should probably rotate your vehicle’s tires about every 5000 to 7500 miles.  Vehicles are different so you should look at the tire rotation section of your vehicle’s owner’s manual and that will tell you for sure how often you should rotate.  In our geographical area with the hills and winter driving, most vehicles now require the oil to be changed about every 5000 miles.  If that’s the case with your vehicle, then your tire rotations will likely coincide with every oil change. 

When do you start thinking about purchasing a new set of tires?

During October and November as winter is quickly approaching, if the tires are down to 4/32 or even 3/32, they should probably be replaced right away. You don’t want to head into the snowy months ahead with tires that are practically bald.  When a tire gets down to that level of tread, they’re not going to be very much good to you if there’s a heavy snow and they’re going to be rendered practically useless in the event of freezing rain.

Can you do a tire rotation yourself?
