Parking Assist Feature on a 2018 Silverado

Are you perplexed by your Silverado parking assist feature?  Well have no fear as this article will guide you through the ins and outs of your Silverado’s front and rear parking assist feature.

The Silverado’s available ultrasonic front and rear parking assist systems (for the model year that ran from 2014-2018) operate at speeds of less than five miles per hour and assist the driver with parking and avoiding objects.  The sensors on the front and rear bumpers detect objects up to 4 feet in front of the vehicle, 8 feet behind the vehicle, and at least 10 inches off the ground.  When the truck is shifted into reverse, the front and rear sensors are automatically turned on.  After your truck is shifted out of reverse the rear sensors are turned off, but the front sensors (if equipped) stay on until the vehicle reaches a speed above 5 miles per hour.  When the Silverado’s forward speed drops below 5 miles per hour, the front sensors automatically turn on again.  The Silverado parking assist feature is really a nice feature to have on your truck as it makes parking in tight spots a snap.

A graphic in the driver information center displays the relative distance to a detected object.  In addition, the rear park assist system also displays a caution symbol on the rear vision camera display.  A high-toned continuous beep is heard when objects are detected near the front bumper and low-toned beeps are heard when objects are detected near the rear bumper.  The interval between the beeps becomes shorter as the vehicle gets closer to the obstacle.  Less than 12 inches away, the tone is continuous.

The Silverado parking assist feature can be turned on or off by pressing the park assist button in the center switch bank.  The park assist button lights up when the system is on and turns off when it’s been disabled.  Front and rear parking assist can also be turned on or “on with towbar attached” through vehicle personalization.  From homepage select Settings, then Park Assist.  Then select either Off, On, or On with Towbar Attached.

The “on with towbar attached” setting allows for the parking assist to work properly with a small item attached to the trailer hitch.  If the parking assist is turned off through vehicle personalization, the park assist button on the center stack will be disabled. To turn parking assist on again, select On in the vehicle personalization menu.

Refrain from backing up with the tailgate down while using the Silverado rear park assist system

The parking assist system can be set to emit seat pulses in the driver’s safety alert seat instead of audible beeps.  To change the alert setting, go to the Collision/Detection Systems menu in the vehicle settings on the infotainment display screen.  Select Alert Type and then select either Beeps or Safety Alert Seat.  Please take note that the Safety Alert Seat is the factory default setting.

Rear parking assist will not work properly if the tailgate is down.  If the tailgate is down, please refrain from using the rear parking assist system.  Doing so could cause you to back into something and accidentally damage your tailgate.
