Pop Art and the Senses: Dubuque Museum of Art’s Spring Exhibition

Eye-popping color and fresh takes on familiar subjects will be the focus of the newest exhibition at the Dubuque Museum of Art.

The Dubuque Museum of Art’s spring exhibition, “Shiny, Sticky, Smooth: Pop Art and the Senses,” includes more than 70 pieces made by Pop Artists of the 1960s and ’70s. Among those are artworks by household names like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Pop Art is a multi-sensory experience that combines bold colors with common subjects. Using carefully chosen materials, textures, and compositions, pop art is eye-catching, but also appeals to sound, taste, touch, and smell.

The exhibition, which runs Feb. 18 to May 14 in the Falb Family Gallery, is from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation.

The Dubuque Museum of Art is open Tuesdays-Fridays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 p.m. Admission is $6 per day for adults, $5 per day for seniors 65+, and $3 per day for students with a college ID.

Pop Art emerged in the late 1950s in the U.S., when Americans were surrounded by an array of new products. Chromed, streamlined cars, brightly colored, glistening candies, polished furniture — the vivid advertisements of these items appealed to the senses and sparked consumer desire. Pop Artists lessened the division between fine art and everyday life.

Collector Jordan Schnitzer will speak at the Museum at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19 about a lifetime of collecting art. His collection of contemporary prints exceeds 10,000 works, making it one of the country’s largest private print collections. He created the Schnitzer Family Foundation, which lends pieces from his collection to institutions across the U.S.

At 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, Alan Garfield, professor of Computer Graphics and Interactive Media at the University of Dubuque, will speak at the Museum. He will provide insights into the Pop Art movement and the lives and careers of some of its leading artists.
