Jeep revealed its two newest offerings in a live broadcast recently: the hybrid Wrangler 4xE, a half-gas/half electric version of the beloved off-road staple, and the all-new Jeep Wagoneer, a re-incarnation of the 1960s station wagon.
The Wrangler 4xE is expected to arrive in showrooms in early 2021, while the Wagoneer will roll onto lots in mid-2021.
Wrangler 4xE
Jeep is striving to become a leader in eco-friendly premium technology, and the Wrangler is the first of its nameplates to offer electrification options.
“Our Jeep 4xe vehicles will be the most efficient, responsible and capable that the brand has ever created,” said Christian Meunier, Global President of Jeep Brand – FCA, in a press release. “We are committed to making Jeep the greenest SUV brand. The electrification of the Jeep lineup will allow commuters to travel solely on electric power, delivering an efficient and fun on-road experience and offering an ability to enjoy even more Jeep capability off-road in nearly complete silence.”
The vehicle has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that is capable of up to 25 miles of purely electric driving. It has two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack with a fuel-efficient, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.
It has 375 horsepower, 470 lb.-ft of torque and gets an estimated 50MPGe.
It has three modes of operation, including Hybrid, Electric, and eSave. Regardless of the mode selected, the Wrangler 4xE operates as hybrid once the battery nears its minimum state of charge.
The vehicle also incorporates regenerative braking, as well as a Max Regen option, which is a more assertive regenerative braking calibration that occurs when the vehicle is coasting. It can stop the vehicle faster than standard regenerative braking and generate more electricity for the battery pack.
Wrangler 4xE will be available in three models: 4xE, Sahara 4xE, and Rubicon 4XE.
Off-roading is no problem in the Wrangler 4xE – all power modes are available when the drivetrain is shifted to 4Lo. The instant availability of torque from the electric motor means a more precise and controlled driving experience for climbing and crawling.
The vehicles will be assembled at FCA’s plant in Toledo, Ohio and is expected to be available by early 2021.
Jeep Wagoneer & Grand Wagoneer
There aren’t as many details available yet on the Wagoneer, as it is currently only a concept model.
But based on that, it pulls some design elements from the old beloved wagon, while piling on luxury throughout.
Real wood, black glass, and metal throughout the interior give an upscale feel to the spacious full-size SUV.
It includes fun extras like a separate touch screen for the front passenger to have access to multimedia to stream movies and control apps. You can also link all the screens in the vehicle to show the same image on each, like a calming fireplace scene.
A basic Wagoneer will start at around $60,000, while the fully loaded Wagoneer may approach or exceed $100,000.
It is expected to arrive at Runde Auto Group of Manchester in the summer of 2021.
