Emmy Winners & Directors Included in the Women in Entertainment Panel at Julien Dubuque International Film Festival

The Julien Film Festival will bring together several women in the entertainment industry for a panel to discuss their experiences.

The free event will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, in the Hotel Julien ballroom.

“The entertainment industry is still a male-dominated field, so it is refreshing to hear perspectives from women involved in the business,” said Susan Gorrell, executive director of the Julien Film Festival. “We hope this panel will provide an interesting look at the industry and help to encourage women to get involved in filmmaking.”

Jamie Babbit

Jamie Babbit

  • Jenelle Riley, Deputy Awards and Features Editor at Variety Magazine, and two-time Emmy Award-winner for her role as host of Variety Studio: Actors on Actors on PBS.
  • Jamie Babbit, Director of television shows including Silicon Valley, GIRLS, and Looking, all on HBO. She has also directed several films that have premiered and won jury prizes at the South by Southwest Film Festival and Sundance.
  • Heather Edwards: Director/Producer. She re-located to Los Angeles and started directing and producing later in life. She spent 20 years behind-

    the-scenes on film sets and used that knowledge for her first project, Strayed, a short film about an unusual family, messed-up priorities, and cats. She is also the author of a picture book.

  • Mary Lou Belli: Director/Author/Teacher. A two-time Emmy Award-winner, she has been directing television shows, including Monk, Wizards of Waverly Place, Hart of Dixie, NCIS New Orleans, Sister Sister, and Girlfriends, for more than 20 years.

The panelists will discuss their experiences in the industry, provide advice for those looking to get into the business, and answer audience questions.

The panel will be hosted by Michael Dunaway, who is the Editor of the Film Section for Paste Magazine and Creative Director for the Sarasota Film Festival.

The Julien Film Festival, April 26-29 in downtown Dubuque, will feature about 115 documentaries, features, and shorts that were selected from more than 700 submissions from over 40 countries. Filmmakers will be in attendance from all over the United States and countries including Czech Republic, Germany, France, Mexico, Australia, and more.
