“Going To Lunch” Now Has A New Meaning thanks to Two Guys in a Z06

What do you think of when you hear the phrase, “I’m going to lunch”?   If you immediately think of a 4000 mile round trip to a burger joint, then you’re not alone.  Many of us leave the office for our half hour or hour long lunch breaks, which is usually acceptable. I frequently drive 5 blocks home to eat lunch and let my dogs out.

An Assistant Editor in Ann Arbor, Michigan had a different idea for his lunch.  Sam Smith’s Thursday started out as a fairly normal day. He was at work, and all of a sudden, he decides he needs a burger. Ok, fine, Ann Arbor probably has about 50 different burger joints to choose from, except he needs a specific burger…from a West Coast ONLY restaurant chain, In-N-Out Burger.

From Ann Arbor, the closest location is in Prescott, Arizona, approximately 1900 miles away. He decided to call his buddy from Chicago to see if he wanted to go with him. It was on the way, and he wanted to make the trip non-stop, so it only made sense to have a second driver. His friend, Jeff gladly agreed to go partly because Sam told him they would be driving a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that the company had on-hand.

Being from the Midwest, I have not eaten at this fast-food restaurant, but it had better be the best burger in the world to make that long of a trip to eat one. He left Ann Arbor around noon Eastern Time on Thursday. He picked Jeff up in Chicago at 6:28 p.m. They drove almost non-stop, with only a few bathroom and drink breaks, and arrived in Arizona at 8:50 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday.

They saw the In-N-Out Burger sign, and relief set in! Their legs, butts, and backs were figuratively screaming at them by this time. They got out of the car, and Jeff said, “There’s a Jack in the Box across the street. You wanna go there instead?” I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to drive cross-country in a Corvette for a specific restaurant, I’m going to end up eating there!

Sam ordered his cheeseburger, fries, and medium Coke. He inhaled it, considering he was hungry a day earlier, and had not eaten yet. They finished eating, threw away their garbage, and walked out the door. What came next, you may ask? They drove home!! Talk about a quick road trip!  And all of it for a hamburger.  The next time these guys tell their friends “I’m going to lunch”, they’ll likely hear the response, “O.K. we’ll see you in a few days.”
